The application of simple, cost-efficient and portable diagnostic devices based on disposable or single-use systems is increasing, both in the food industry and in the clinical or veterinary sector. In this context, BIOLAN makes the difference, as it develops sustainable biosensors that are composed of recyclable materials that contribute to the reduction of environmental impact and do not use reagents that are toxic for the environment and for the user.
BIOLAN, together with TEKNIKER and GRUNVER, has participated in the ECOBIOSENSOR project, a project funded by FEDER and IHOBE, whose objective has been the eco-design of the BIO 7000 portable measuring device. This device is based on a specific and precise enzymatic biosensor that quantifies different parameters of interest for the food and health industry. It is an eco-designed device, since, compared to the old BIO 700 model from which it derives, it has reduced weight and volume and optimized the use of its consumables. The environmental footprint of the full life of the new models has been reduced by 21.8% compared to the previous ones, reaching 76.5% in the manufacturing phase, 59.7% in distribution and 55.7% at the end of life.
In addition, the BIO 7000 device is equipped with connectivity for digital analytical monitoring that facilitates the traceability of products, processes and their interrelationship with the environment.
BIOLAN has achieved the eco-design of its portable biosensor, which has allowed it to launch diagnostic solutions for the food industry with a lower environmental impact. This commitment is not only reflected in its products, but also in its management processes, facilities and communication to customers and suppliers.
The lessons learned from the ECOBIOSENSOR project encourage the continuation of work on the eco-design of other devices and analysis elements, promoting the adoption of business models based on the circular economy and eco-innovation.
At BIOLAN we have transformed our products and our business, in order to remain competitive, with the commitment to ensure the current and future preservation of our environment.
