How much salt do we consume? Measuring it is key to our health

Salt, or sodium chloride (NaCl), is one of the most widely used ingredients in food production. It is used to enhance flavor, improve color and texture, and extend the shelf life of many products we consume on a daily basis.

However, high salt intake is directly linked to an increased risk of high blood pressure, one of the main causes of cardiovascular disease. Today, average global salt consumption stands at between 9 and 11 grams per day, which is almost double the limit recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), which sets a maximum intake of less than 5 grams of salt per day, equivalent to about 2 grams of sodium.

Given this context, society needs analytical solutions that are accurate, fast, and robust. Processed foods contain components that can interfere with traditional analytical methods. Although raw materials have a simpler composition, they can also contain impurities or variations that affect analysis. In addition, the industry requires systems that allow for continuous, on-site control during all stages of production, with the aim of ensuring batch homogeneity and process stability.

In response to this need, BIOLAN launched a portable, fast, accurate, and multi-parameter device for the food industry over a year ago that measures salt content in sectors such as fishing, meat, and dairy. In addition, this intuitive device does not require the use of qualified personnel, is sustainable, and does not use toxic reagents. Its digital integration reduces errors, optimizes time, automates processes, and securely stores data in the cloud, all in a single device. Since its launch, the response in the fishing industry has been very positive, and the dairy and meat sectors, which have recently been added, are expected to follow suit.
