In BIOLAN we are committed to the environment, so in 2023 we implemented an Environmental Management System certified under ISO 14001:2015, reinforcing our environmental responsibility.
Our Management Policy has defined our basic values and principles, including our commitment to the environment, and is available to all interested parties.
BIOLAN’s objective is to identify the actions to be taken to reduce the negative impacts of our activity on the environment, achieving an Environmental Sustainable Development.
We control the consumption of natural resources on which we can act, mainly energy consumption, which has been reduced by 18% in 2023. BIOLAN had a 12kW photovoltaic panels installation, which has been extended at the end of 2023 with another 20kW photovoltaic panels installation. Likewise, in 2023, a second recharging point for electric cars was installed with two connections each, promoting the use of these vehicles.
We make a reasoned use of other resources such as natural gas, which has been reduced by 67%. We are also working to reduce paper and plastic consumption, achieving a 2% reduction of each by 2023.
Related to consumption, emissions from raw material supplies have been reduced by 16% and those related to the shipment of our products by 20%.
At BIOLAN we control and correctly manage non-hazardous and hazardous waste according to its nature with authorised waste managers and always complying with the legal requirements established for this purpose. BIOLAN’s own activity does not generate a significant volume of waste, remains stable, and does not generate a significant environmental impact.
The contribution of the organisation’s staff is essential for the improvement of the organisation’s environmental performance. The commitment and environmental awareness of all BIOLAN staff is promoted through continuous training, adopting simple and useful measures within the company, guaranteeing the reduction of negative environmental impacts related to the activities carried out and complying with legal requirements and other requirements.
We also communicate to our suppliers the environmental requirements to be met and we make recommendations to our customers on the use of our products, thus requesting their commitment to the environment.
We identify and analyse all relevant legislation applicable to our organisation, incorporating legislative changes and assess compliance with legal requirements, ensuring that current and applicable legislation is complied with at all times.
BIOLAN is firmly committed to a working culture of Equality between Women and Men, the visibility of women scientists and technologists, and the promotion of technical vocation in girls, recognising female talent and valuing the role of women in the Biotech sector.
BIOLAN’s staff is currently made up mainly of women, who represent 66% of the team.
Access to education is crucial to improve people’s lives and promote the development of the most disadvantaged groups. At BIOLAN we collaborate with the NGO EGOAIZIA to promote the education of women in Peru. We provide scholarships to women students without economic resources in Alto Trujillo to enable them to pursue higher education, thus eliminating the structural obstacles to earning a living.
Within the SDGs, they recognise the importance of education for sustainable development which requires providing inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all. BIOLAN is currently collaborating with the University of Deusto by incorporating one of its students to our staff in order to provide students with knowledge, skills and motivation and to create opportunities for students and professionals from different sectors.
Disability is a question of human rights and also of sustainability, as without inclusion there is no real sustainability. At BIOLAN we collaborate with Lantegi Batuak through its Lanerako Supported Employment Programme, which recognises our contribution to the integration of people with intellectual disabilities into the ordinary labour market.
We have transformed our business in order to remain competitive, ensuring the current and future development of our social and cooperative environment. On our path towards digitalisation, we are transforming both our processes within the company and our products and services.
The new biosensors are designed and manufactured according to eco-design and circular economy principles that allow us to substantially reduce our environmental impact. We are also moving towards a progressive reduction of plastic in our reagent shipments.
