ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE

In BIOLAN we are deeply committed to the environment, so in 2023 we implemented an Environmental Management System certified under ISO 14001:2015, reinforcing our environmental responsibility.

Our Management Policy has defined our basic values and principles, including our commitment to the environment, and is available to all interested parties.

BIOLAN’s objective is to identify the actions to be taken to reduce the negative impacts of our activity on the environment, achieving an Environmental Sustainable Development.

CONSUMPTION OF NATURAL RESOURCES

We control the consumption of natural resources on which we can act, mainly related to energy consumption, having increased by 121% the consumption of renewable energy during 2024. BIOLAN has two installations of photovoltaic panels of 12kW and 20kW respectively. In addition, there are two recharging point installations for electric cars with two connections each, promoting the use of these vehicles.

We make a reasoned use of other resources such as natural gas, which has been reduced by 51% in 2024. We are also working to reduce raw material consumption, achieving a 26% reduction in electronic material, 7% in steel and 12% in chemicals by 2024.

Also in relation to consumption, emissions derived from raw material supplies have been reduced by 8% and those related to the shipment of our products by 4%, achieving one more year the reduction of emissions thanks to the good environmental practices that BIOLAN has implemented.

WASTE MANAGEMENT

In BIOLAN we control and manage correctly the non-hazardous and hazardous waste according to its nature with authorized managers and always complying with the legal requirements established for this purpose. BIOLAN’s own activity does not generate a significant volume of waste, remains stable, and does not generate a significant environmental impact. Even so, BIOLAN with a desire to improve has managed to reduce the generation of hazardous liquid waste by 47%, 20% in packaging and 100% in non-hazardous waste from electrical and electronic equipment, managing to extend the useful life of these devices used in the company.

INTERNAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS

The contribution of the organization’s personnel is essential for the improvement of the environmental performance of the organization. The commitment and awareness for the environment of all BIOLAN staff is encouraged through continuous training, adopting simple and useful measures within the company, ensuring the reduction of negative environmental impacts related to the activities carried out and complying with legal requirements and other requirements. We also focus on our commitment to social and economic sustainability, carrying out initiatives that have an impact on different SDGs.

Likewise, we communicate to our suppliers the environmental requirements to be met and we make recommendations for the use of our products to our customers, thus requesting their commitment to the environment. BIOLAN communicates through different means our environmental and social commitment to all our stakeholders.

COMPLIANCE WITH LEGISLATION

We identify and analyse all relevant legislation applicable to our organisation, incorporating legislative changes and assess compliance with legal requirements, ensuring that current and applicable legislation is complied with at all times.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

PROMOTING GENDER EQUALITY

BIOLAN is firmly committed to a working culture of Equality between Women and Men, the visibility of women scientists and technologists, and the promotion of technical vocation in girls, recognising female talent and valuing the role of women in the Biotech sector.

BIOLAN’s staff is currently made up mainly of women, who represent 66% of the team.

ACTIVELY EXERCISING SOLIDARITY

Access to education is crucial to improve people’s lives and promote the development of the most disadvantaged groups. At BIOLAN we collaborate with the NGO EGOAIZIA to promote the education of women in Peru. We provide scholarships to women students without economic resources in Alto Trujillo to enable them to pursue higher education, thus eliminating the structural obstacles to earning a living.

COLLABORATION WITH UNIVERSITIES AND SCHOOLS

Within the SDGs, they recognise the importance of education for sustainable development which requires providing inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all. BIOLAN is currently collaborating with the University of Deusto by incorporating one of its students to our staff in order to provide students with knowledge, skills and motivation and to create opportunities for students and professionals from different sectors.

SUPPORT FOR DEPENDENCY, VULNERABILITY AND DISABILITY

Disability is a question of human rights and also of sustainability, as without inclusion there is no real sustainability. At BIOLAN we collaborate with Lantegi Batuak through its Lanerako Supported Employment Programme, which recognises our contribution to the integration of people with intellectual disabilities into the ordinary labour market.

SUSTAINABLE GROWTH

CIRCULAR ECONOMY

We have transformed our business in order to remain competitive, ensuring the current and future development of our social and cooperative environment. On our path towards digitalisation, we are transforming both our processes within the company and our products and services.

The new biosensors are designed and manufactured according to eco-design and circular economy principles that allow us to substantially reduce our environmental impact. We are also moving towards a progressive reduction of plastic in our reagent shipments.
