OUR COMMITMENT TO THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

At BIOLAN we run our operations under premises that ensure the protection of the environment and humanity. We seek to drive change in the areas where it can have the greatest influence, making all our products, systems and services guarantee a more sustainable future.

Therefore, at BIOLAN we currently have an impact on 14 of the 17 SDGs.

ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE

At BIOLAN we have integrated the Environmental Management System into the Quality Management System (ISO 9001:2015) being certified under the ISO 14001:2015 standard, thus reinforcing our environmental commitment.

We have defined a Management Policy that defines the basic values and principles of our organisation, including our commitment to the environment, which is available to all interested parties on our website.

BIOLAN identifies the environmental aspects and impacts, both direct and indirect, through the life cycle of our products, obtaining the significant environmental aspects. Environmental objectives, indicators, risks and opportunities are established in order to become increasingly environmentally friendly.

CONSUMPTION OF NATURAL RESOURCES

We control the consumption of natural resources on which we can act, mainly energy consumption. At BIOLAN we have installed 12kW photovoltaic panels to be able to self-consume the energy generated, which is around 18% and is increasing annually. We also have a charging point for electric cars with two connections, encouraging the use of these vehicles.

We make sensible use of other resources such as natural gas and water, which have been reduced by 22% and 11%, respectively, by 2022. We are also working to reduce the consumption of electronic material, having achieved a 26% reduction by 2022.

WASTE MANAGEMENT

At BIOLAN we control and correctly manage non-hazardous and hazardous waste according to its nature with authorised waste managers and always complying with the legal requirements established for this purpose. BIOLAN’s own activity does not generate a significant volume of waste, remains stable, and does not generate a significant environmental impact.

INTERNAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS

The contribution of the organisation’s staff is essential for the improvement of the organisation’s environmental performance. The commitment and environmental awareness of all BIOLAN staff is promoted through continuous training, adapting simple and useful measures within the company. Ensuring the reduction of negative environmental impacts related to the activities carried out and complying with legal and other requirements.

We also communicate to our suppliers the environmental requirements to be met and make recommendations to our customers on the use of our products, thus asking them to make a commitment to the environment.

COMPLIANCE WITH LEGISLATION

We identify and analyse all legislation applicable to our organisation, incorporating legislative changes and assess compliance with legal requirements. Ensuring that current and applicable legislation is complied with at all times.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

PROMOTING GENDER EQUALITY

BIOLAN is firmly committed to a working culture of Equality between Women and Men, the visibility of women scientists and technologists, and the promotion of technical vocation in girls, recognising female talent and valuing the role of women in the Biotech sector.

BIOLAN’s staff is currently made up mainly of women, who represent 66% of the team.

ACTIVELY EXERCISING SOLIDARITY

Access to education is crucial to improve people’s lives and promote the development of the most disadvantaged groups. At BIOLAN we collaborate with the NGO EGOAIZIA to promote the education of women in Peru. We provide scholarships to women students without economic resources in Alto Trujillo to enable them to pursue higher education, thus eliminating the structural obstacles to earning a living.

COLLABORATION WITH UNIVERSITIES AND SCHOOLS

Within the SDGs, they recognise the importance of education for sustainable development which requires providing inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all. BIOLAN is currently collaborating with the University of Deusto by incorporating one of its students to our staff in order to provide students with knowledge, skills and motivation and to create opportunities for students and professionals from different sectors.

SUPPORT FOR DEPENDENCY, VULNERABILITY AND DISABILITY

Disability is a question of human rights and also of sustainability, as without inclusion there is no real sustainability. At BIOLAN we collaborate with Lantegi Batuak through its Lanerako Supported Employment Programme, which recognises our contribution to the integration of people with intellectual disabilities into the ordinary labour market.

SUSTAINABLE GROWTH

CIRCULAR ECONOMY

We have transformed our business in order to remain competitive, ensuring the current and future development of our social and cooperative environment. On our path towards digitalisation, we are transforming both our processes within the company and our products and services.

The new biosensors are designed and manufactured according to eco-design and circular economy principles that allow us to substantially reduce our environmental impact. We are also moving towards a progressive reduction of plastic in our reagent shipments.
